Itinerary at a Glance
Livingstone & Lower Zambezi, Zambia
Livingstone, Zambia
Three nights in Livingstone, Zambia, combining Victoria Falls, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, and the Zambezi River. Experiences include a guided tour of Victoria Falls from the Zambian side, a morning walking safari with white rhino in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, an elephant interaction experience along the river, a sunset river cruise aboard the Lady Livingstone, a visit to Mukuni Village and Maramba Market, and a 5-course dinner aboard our historic Royal Livingstone Express crossing the Victoria Falls Bridge at sunset.
Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders,” forms the largest continuous sheet of falling water on Earth. The Zambian side offers a more intimate perspective of the Falls, where walking paths wind through rainforest sustained year-round by the spray rising from the gorge below. Along the basalt cliffs above the Batoka Gorge, shifting mist, changing light, and seasonal water levels continually reshape the views across the Zambezi. Beyond the Falls themselves, the surrounding landscape transitions into riverine woodland and open bushveld where elephant move along the riverbanks and African fish eagles, bee-eaters, hornbills, and kingfishers remain constant companions along the water.
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park occupies a narrow stretch of riverfront upstream from the Falls and remains the only place in Zambia where white rhino can be seen in the wild. Wildlife moves between riverbank woodland and open floodplain as elephants feed along the Zambezi and hippos surface in the quieter channels below. Much of the experience here unfolds around the river itself, from sunset cruises beneath drifting clouds of spray to evenings aboard the Royal Livingstone Express as the historic train crosses the Victoria Falls Bridge at sunset.
Set directly on the banks of the Zambezi River, David Livingstone Safari Lodge is a contemporary riverside property designed around expansive river views and open-air spaces connected to the surrounding landscape. Spacious river-facing rooms feature private balconies overlooking the Zambezi, while gardens, swimming pools, and outdoor dining areas remain closely tied to the rhythm of the river itself. Hippos are often heard from the channels below as the Zambezi becomes part of daily life throughout the stay.
Included:
- 3 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 2 dinners, 1 sundowner drinks and canapés on the river
- Guided Victoria Falls tour
- Morning walking safari with white rhino in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park
- Elephant interaction experience with lunch
- Sunset river cruise aboard the Lady Livingstone with local beverages and canapés
- Mukuni Village and Maramba Market tour
- Royal Livingstone Express 5-course dinner with selected beverages
Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia
Four nights in Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia, focused on river safaris, walking safaris, game drives, and wildlife viewing within one of Africa’s least-visited safari regions. Scheduled and charter flights connect Livingstone with the Lower Zambezi, tracing the course of the Zambezi River and the escarpments that define the valley below before arriving deep within the national park. Experiences include morning and afternoon game drives, guided walking safaris, river cruises, night drives, and time exploring the channels, floodplains, and riverbanks that shape daily life in the Lower Zambezi.
Lower Zambezi National Park stretches along the northern banks of the Zambezi River opposite Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park, forming one of southern Africa’s most important unfenced wildlife corridors. The landscape shifts constantly between river channels, winterthorn forest, floodplain, and escarpment, supporting elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, wild dog, hippo, crocodile, and large concentrations of birdlife. Wildlife viewing here often unfolds at water level, where elephants swim between islands, hippos surface beside the boats, and fish eagles call from the riverine forest overhead.
Unlike many higher-traffic safari regions, the Lower Zambezi remains remarkably quiet, with limited camps and large protected wilderness areas allowing wildlife encounters to unfold with little interruption. Walking safaris reveal the smaller details of the ecosystem often missed from vehicles alone, while night drives offer another perspective entirely as hyena, civets, genets, porcupines, and other nocturnal species emerge beneath the stars. Much of the experience here is shaped by the river itself, which acts as both lifeline and migration route through the valley.
Royal Zambezi Lodge is a refined tented safari lodge overlooking the Zambezi River, with spacious canvas suites positioned beneath the escarpment rising above the valley floor. Open-air lounges, riverside dining areas, and firelit gathering spaces remain closely connected to the surrounding wilderness, while wildlife frequently moves directly through camp between the river and the woodland beyond.
Included:
- 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 dinners
- Local brand beverages and limited laundry
- Scheduled and charter flights between Livingstone, Lusaka, and Lower Zambezi National Park
- Morning and afternoon game drives
- Guided walking safaris
- River cruises on the Zambezi River
- Night drives

July – September | Peak Dry Season
July through September are among the most sought-after months for safari travel in Zambia. Days are typically mild to warm, with cool mornings, clear skies, and very little rainfall. As seasonal water sources dry out across the Lower Zambezi Valley, wildlife concentrates along the Zambezi River, floodplains, and remaining inland water sources, creating exceptional game viewing conditions. Elephant, buffalo, hippo, and other wildlife gather in large numbers along the riverbanks, while thinning vegetation improves visibility through the woodland and open floodplain landscapes.
Victoria Falls continues to flow well during this period, with less spray and more of the rock formations visible as water levels gradually fall, making this an excellent time for photography of the Falls from the Zambian side.
In the Lower Zambezi, this is also the prime season for walking safaris, river safaris, and game drives as dry conditions bring wildlife closer to the river and movement through the bush becomes easier and more predictable.
October | Hot Season & Dramatic Wildlife Viewing
October marks the end of the dry season and is often considered one of the most intense wildlife viewing periods of the year in the Lower Zambezi. Temperatures rise significantly across Zambia, with hot afternoons and warm evenings, while wildlife activity increases around the permanent water sources of the Zambezi River and its channels. Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and other predators are commonly seen moving between the riverbanks, woodland, and floodplains during this period.
Victoria Falls reaches its lower seasonal flow around October, revealing more of the basalt gorge and underlying rock formations as water levels continue to recede from their earlier peak. The Zambian side often offers clearer visibility into the gorge and surrounding landscape during this time of year.
In the Lower Zambezi, the dry heat intensifies wildlife activity along the river itself, where boat safaris and game drives often reveal large concentrations of animals gathering at the water’s edge beneath increasingly dramatic skies.
November – December | Early Green Season
The first rains typically arrive in November, transforming the dry valley floor into fresh green vegetation and renewing seasonal pans across the Lower Zambezi. Temperatures remain warm, often accompanied by dramatic afternoon clouds and occasional thunderstorms. This transitional season brings excellent photographic conditions, clearer air, and fewer visitors throughout the region.
Birdlife becomes especially active during this period, with migratory species returning to the Zambezi Valley and surrounding woodland ecosystems. Young antelope begin appearing across the floodplains, while the changing light, dramatic skies, and greener landscapes create a very different safari atmosphere from the dry season months.
Victoria Falls typically remains at lower water levels through much of November before seasonal rains upstream gradually begin restoring flow in December, bringing greener landscapes and improving water coverage across the Falls.
