Itinerary at a Glance
Victoria Falls & Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Three nights in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, combining Victoria Falls, the Zambezi River, wildlife experiences, and cultural exploration. Experiences include a guided tour of Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwean side, a sunset river safari on the Zambezi, a night game drive and bush dinner at Stanley & Livingstone Private Reserve, a visit to a local township community, and a 5-course dinner aboard the Bushtracks Express crossing the Victoria Falls Bridge at sunset.
Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders,” forms the largest continuous sheet of falling water on Earth. The Zimbabwean side offers the most expansive views, where mist rises through riverine forest sustained year-round by the spray of the Falls. Along the edge of the gorge, walking paths trace basalt cliffs above the Zambezi as rainbows shift constantly through the drifting mist. The surrounding landscape supports a rich ecosystem of riverine forest, woodland, and open bushveld, with birdlife that includes trumpeter hornbills, African fish eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and raptors riding thermals above the Batoka Gorge.
Life in Victoria Falls unfolds around the river. Late afternoons settle into slow-moving channels where hippos surface beside the boat and crocodiles rest along the banks in the fading light. Beyond the falls themselves, the surrounding region blends conservation areas, safari landscapes, and local communities shaped by generations of connection to the Zambezi. Evening game drives at nearby Stanley & Livingstone Private Reserve offer a different perspective on the bush as nocturnal wildlife begins to emerge after dark.
Set just minutes from Victoria Falls and the national park entrance, Insika Lodge is a contemporary Zimbabwean safari lodge designed around quiet gardens, natural stone, and open-air spaces that remain closely connected to the surrounding bush. Spacious rooms open onto private terraces, while a central swimming pool, spa, and elevated dining areas overlook a waterhole frequently visited by wildlife. The lodge offers a relaxed and comfortable base for exploring Victoria Falls while remaining connected to the landscapes and wildlife of the region.
Included:
- 3 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 2 dinners, 1 sundowner drinks and canapés on the river
- Guided Victoria Falls tour
- Night game drive and bush dinner at Stanley & Livingstone Private Reserve
- Sunset river safari with local drinks and canapés
- Township community tour in Victoria Falls
- Bushtracks Express 5-course dinner with selected beverages
Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
Four nights in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, focused on game drives, night drives, wildlife viewing, and time on a remote private concession bordering one of Africa’s great elephant landscapes. A shared charter flight connects Victoria Falls with Hwange, offering aerial views across Zimbabwe’s river systems, woodland, and open plains before landing deep within the safari region. Experiences include morning and afternoon game drives, a night drive, a bush sundowner overlooking the Dete Vlei, and a visit to the Painted Dog Conservation Centre supporting one of Africa’s most endangered predators.
Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve, shaped by vast grasslands, teak forests, seasonal pans, and ancient wildlife migration routes that support one of the largest elephant populations in Africa. Wildlife moves constantly across the landscape here: elephant herds gathering at waterholes, lion moving through the woodland edges, buffalo crossing the plains in large numbers, and giraffe, kudu, sable, and zebra spreading across the open vlei systems. Birdlife is equally prolific, from lilac-breasted rollers and hornbills to raptors circling above the thermals rising from the dry plains.
The eastern region of Hwange offers a quieter, more remote safari experience where wildlife viewing unfolds at a slower pace and often without other vehicles nearby. Night drives reveal another side of the ecosystem entirely, when civets, genets, porcupines, hyena, and other nocturnal species emerge after dark. The surrounding concession landscapes remain deeply connected to long-standing conservation efforts, including the protection of African painted dogs, one of the continent’s rarest and most endangered carnivores.
Iganyana Tented Camp is a boutique tented safari camp overlooking the Dete Vlei, an ancient wildlife corridor that draws elephant, antelope, and predators through the surrounding concession. Spacious canvas tents, open-air dining spaces, and uninterrupted views across the bush create an atmosphere that feels both remote and deeply connected to the rhythms of Hwange itself.
Included:
- 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 dinners
- Local brand beverages and limited laundry
- Shared charter flights between Victoria Falls and Hwange
- Morning and afternoon game drives on a private Hwange concession
- Night drive
- Bush sundowner picnic
- Visit to the Painted Dog Conservation Centre including conservation contribution

August – September | Peak Dry Season
August and September are among the most sought-after months for safari travel in Zimbabwe. Days are typically mild to warm, with cool mornings, clear skies, and very little rainfall. As seasonal water sources dry out across Hwange National Park, wildlife concentrates around pumped waterholes, natural pans, and the Dete Vlei, creating exceptional game viewing conditions. Elephant herds gather in large numbers throughout the region, while thinning vegetation improves visibility across the woodland and open plains.
Victoria Falls continues to flow well during this period, with less spray and more of the rock formations visible as water levels gradually fall, making this an excellent time for photography of the Falls.
October | Hot Season & Dramatic Wildlife Viewing
October marks the end of the dry season and is often considered one of the most intense wildlife viewing periods of the year in Hwange National Park. Temperatures rise significantly across Zimbabwe, with hot afternoons and warm evenings, while wildlife activity increases around permanent water sources as animals move steadily through the concession landscapes and national park interior. Large elephant herds, buffalo, lion, and other predators are commonly seen gathering near waterholes and open vlei systems during this period.
Victoria Falls reaches its lowest annual flow around October, revealing dramatic sections of the basalt gorge and underlying rock formations, though the Zimbabwean side still typically retains visible flow across portions of the Falls.
November – December | Early Green Season
The first rains typically arrive in November, transforming the dry bushveld into fresh green grasslands and renewing seasonal pans across Hwange. Temperatures remain warm, often accompanied by dramatic afternoon clouds and occasional thunderstorms. This transitional season brings excellent photographic conditions, clearer air, and fewer visitors throughout the region.
Birdlife becomes especially active during this time, with migratory species returning across Zimbabwe’s river systems, woodland, and open plains. Young antelope begin appearing throughout Hwange, while the changing light and greener landscapes create a very different safari atmosphere from the peak dry season months.
Victoria Falls typically remains at lower water levels through much of November before seasonal rains upstream gradually begin restoring flow in December, bringing greener landscapes and improving water coverage across the Falls.
