Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

Day 3-6

Mana Pools is wild and photographs are distinctively different, often with a big bull elephant standing on his back legs reaching high into the tree canopy. Elephants love oranges too and you aren't allowed to bring them into this park! Exciting safaris are by canoe and boat on the Zambezi, or on foot or vehicle along the riverine forest.

Favorite activities ? apart from game drives, walks, canoe trips, tiger fishing, and river cruises - are the secret baths-with-a-view, riverside infinity pool, and a night on the 'Star Bed' platform. Add some elephants wandering through camp, and you've got the perfect safari experience.

Destination

Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Day 6-9

Hwange has an atmosphere unlike anywhere else, created by a landscape of grasslands, mopane woodlands, salt-lick pans, and numerous waterholes. There are huge herds of elephants, including big old bull tuskers, predators like lion, leopard and cheetah, and a better-than-average chance of seeing highly endangered wild dog, thanks to Painted Dog Conservation NPO.

Accommodation

Little Makalolo

3 Nights

Hwange contains a veritable Noah's ark of beasts, including rare wild dog and huge herds of elephants and buffaloes, best viewed on game drives and walks, at waterholes and the hide beside this tented camp (which includes a family unit).

Destination

Kariba, Zimbabwe

Day 9-12

When the Zambezi was dammed for hydro-electric power, Nyaminyami River God sent a once-in-a-thousand-year flood to show his displeasure. There's certainly something mysterious about Lake Kariba, with its drowned hardwood tree trunks and glorious sunsets. Watch game in Matusadona National Park and go fishing from boats, but never be tempted to swim - there's a territorial crocodile every 100 yards of shoreline.

Accommodation

Changa Safari Camp

3 Nights

Scooping 'Best Of' Awards for family safari, eco-sensitivity, value, design and cuisine, this lakeside camp has easy access to see the animals of Matusadona National Park, and Lake Kariba activities like boating, tiger fishing, and catching bream for supper.

In Our Travelers' Words

At the end of the day our travelers are most qualified to describe the African safari experience, and they certainly say it best.

The Peacock Family
Multi-Generational Safari

"Our youngest, Emily is almost 7. And mom and dad are in their late 70's. And the rest of us fall somewhere in between - and I can tell you we ALL just had the best time! It's tricky to have a plan that appeals to everyone. The thought of our daily adventure was so exciting, that no one minded the early morning wake-ups - not even the teenagers! They were often the first ones on the jeep - as they couldn't wait to start the drive each day."

The Ousterhout Family
Family Safari

"My father-in-law had always wanted to go to Africa, and invited us all to go with him to celebrate his 80th birthday. We went with no expectations, and the trip was beyond anything we could have imagined. In each camp we were exhilarated to be so unbelievably close to animals. Our guides really turned the safari into an educational experience for the girls with in-depth discussions on not just the wildlife, but also history, culture, and the relationship between tourism and the environment. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime trip – but we hope to return."

Tamar Sherer & Chris Cooper
Active Safari

"This was our fourth trip to Africa, and by far the best. We keep going back because we love the whole experience: the people, the wildlife, their behavior, the environment, the accommodations, the music, everything. We chose Bushtracks for this custom adventure with two goals: to see the migration and to see the gorillas. Experiencing the migration was like witnessing a miracle in process. Could it get any better? Yes - the gorilla treks were the most exhausting thing we've ever done, but worth every exhilarating ache. Amazing!"
