Akagera National Park
Rwanda
Rwanda’s Only Big Five Park
This park is a conservation success, making a comeback after the Rwandan Civil War and poaching. A third of the park comprises lakes and papyrus swamps, the rest is open plains and woodlands - perfect wildlife habitat. Lions and rhino were successfully reintroduced, completing the Big Five compliment. It also gets birders twitching, with 482 species, including rare shoebill storks.
