Windhoek, Namibia

Day -1

Namibia’s capital city aspires to greatness and is the most modern town in Namibia, with the country’s main international airport. It’s a strange mix of colonial German architecture and liberation memorials, and this blend continues with people of many tribes and nationalities. Its high altitude in an airy basin surrounded by mountains, positions Windhoek as the gateway for exploring Namibia.

Accommodation

Hotel Heinitzburg

1 Night

This turreted castle was built for love just over a hundred years ago, by a German Count for his fiancé. Now a hotel, its sumptuous interiors are lavishly decorated, with splendid views over Windhoek and surrounding hills.

Destination

Sossusvlei, Namibia

Day 2-5

The sensuous curves and crests of these vividly orange sand dunes, just begged to be climbed. The older the dune the brighter the color from iron oxidization and a gazillion fragments of garnets, in this land of precious stones. Rising tantalizingly to almost 1,000 ft, this supreme desert has the highest sand dunes in the world and the starriest nights you'll ever see!

Little Kulala

3 Nights

Nothing compares to the solitude and starry nights of this rippling orange desert, whose dunes are the highest in the world. See creatures big and small on walks, drives, quad bikes or hot air balloon, and stargaze from your ‘skybed’.

Destination

Hoanib, Namibia

Day 5-8

This wild contrasting landscape ranges from lush riverbanks and towering craggy mountains to grasslands swaying in the breeze and sand dunes rippling into the distance. Insert into this picture desert-adapted elephants, rhino, lion and antelopes and you'll think you are dreaming. Then add sparsely-clad nomadic Himba, and Victorian-gowned Herero, and you'll know you've stepped through the looking glass!

Accommodation

Hoanib Skeleton Coast

3 Nights

There’s a peaceful other-worldliness in this starkly beautiful scenery that you’ll never forget. Bushman paintings hide amongst rocks and freshwater springs give succor to antelopes, lion and desert-adapted elephants and rhinos, while the Skeleton coast has seal colonies numbering thousands.

Destination

Kunene River, Namibia

Day 8-11

The Kunene River creates the border between Namibia and Angola, with big rapids along its route. No river rafter in their right mind goes further downriver than scenic Epupa Falls, for fear of gigantic Nile crocodiles. Proud Himba live in this desert landscape and graze goats on sparse shrubbery, moving camp when necessary. A peek into their tribal life is enlightening.

Serra Cafema

3 Nights

You don’t have to be a serious adventurer to come here…but it helps! This remote camp - yet still very luxurious - hugs the banks of the crocodile-infested Kunene River, in the arid desert that’s home to exquisitely beautiful nomadic Himba.

In Our Travelers' Words

At the end of the day our travelers are most qualified to describe the African safari experience, and they certainly say it best.

The Peacock Family
Multi-Generational Safari

"Our youngest, Emily is almost 7. And mom and dad are in their late 70's. And the rest of us fall somewhere in between - and I can tell you we ALL just had the best time! It's tricky to have a plan that appeals to everyone. The thought of our daily adventure was so exciting, that no one minded the early morning wake-ups - not even the teenagers! They were often the first ones on the jeep - as they couldn't wait to start the drive each day."

The Ousterhout Family
Family Safari

"My father-in-law had always wanted to go to Africa, and invited us all to go with him to celebrate his 80th birthday. We went with no expectations, and the trip was beyond anything we could have imagined. In each camp we were exhilarated to be so unbelievably close to animals. Our guides really turned the safari into an educational experience for the girls with in-depth discussions on not just the wildlife, but also history, culture, and the relationship between tourism and the environment. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime trip – but we hope to return."

Tamar Sherer & Chris Cooper
Active Safari

"This was our fourth trip to Africa, and by far the best. We keep going back because we love the whole experience: the people, the wildlife, their behavior, the environment, the accommodations, the music, everything. We chose Bushtracks for this custom adventure with two goals: to see the migration and to see the gorillas. Experiencing the migration was like witnessing a miracle in process. Could it get any better? Yes - the gorilla treks were the most exhausting thing we've ever done, but worth every exhilarating ache. Amazing!"
