Udaipur, India

Aptly nicknamed ‘City of Lakes’, Udaipur is one of India’s most picturesque cities. Wander the labyrinthine streets and discover the city’s rich heritage and culture in its opulent palaces, ancient temples, colorful bazaars, and vibrant arts scene. Enjoy a relaxing lake cruise, delight in Rajasthani cuisine, and stroll through local markets in search of artisanal handiwork, such as traditional jewelry,  decorated textiles, and pottery.

Udaipur is loveliest between October and March when the weather is mild and pleasant. Time your visit with Holi, the ‘Festival of Colors’, and witness the rituals and exuberant festivities of this springtime Hindu celebration as the streets come alive with chanting, drumming, and dancing. March is also considered the optimum month to visit central India’s wildlife parks. As foliage recedes, animals are easier to spot, making this a great time to combine a visit to Udaipur with a safari in a wildlife park or tiger reserve, such as Ranthambore National Park.
