Geyser Peak

Professor Scott Pearson has been studying economic change in developing countries for four decades. Between 1968 and 2002, Scott taught economic development and international trade in the Food Research Institute, Stanford University.

He has co-authored a dozen books, won several awards for his research and teaching, and advised governments on food and agricultural policy. In most years, he spent four or five months working abroad, mostly in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Southern Europe.

Since retiring, he has lectured on more than 30 Travel/Study trips. His new passion is to gain a better understanding of why empires and nation states have risen and fallen.

 

David Abernethy, professor emeritus of political science, is a specialist on politics in sub-Saharan Africa. He taught courses on "Race, Class and Political Change in Southern Africa" throughout the period of South Africa's tumultuous transition from apartheid to electoral democracy. Among his students were current Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer ('85; MA, '85, '89 and '91; PhD '94) and Amy Biehl ('89), whose parents established a foundation in her honor following her murder in Cape Town in 1993. In 1986 Professor Abernethy testified before the Secretary of State's Advisory Commission on U.S. Policy toward South Africa.
