Unforgettable Experiences

Ballooning over Bagan, and Putao

Journal Entry: Day 9

Bagan and Putao, Myanmar

After an exhilarating balloon experience over the plains of Bagan we flew North into the foothills of the Himalayas and learned about a myriad of cultures and rare Himalayan wildlife.

Situated in Myanmar's greenest and most remote state, Malikha Lodge is completely cut off from the outside world by millions of acres of subtropical rainforest and jagged peaks, with the only access being by air.

Traditional style bungalows have been carefully placed to create a sense of idyllic village life in this open garden paradise. Placed discreetly amongst bamboo trees, each bungalow offers a spacious living area centered on an enormous handcrafted teak bathtub. A fireplace next to the bath completes the sense of luxury, and provides warmth for the private daybeds outside, where views of distant mountains can be seen through the foliage.

The focal point of Malikha is the main lodge, where guests come to gather around two blazing log fires for drinks.

The lodge is also perched high above the Nam Lang River with views of mountains and rice terraces. Designed by architect Jean Michel Gathy (of Aman Resorts fame), the structures merge with old growth bamboo forests, and offer intimate luxury in this extraordinary wilderness setting.
