Namibia Desert & Cheetah Safari
The Big Five, Remote Deserts, and Rare Rhinos and Cheetahs
This safari begins in the world’s oldest and driest desert, the Namib, where you can see spectacular red sand dunes that arc over 1000 feet into a clear blue sky. From your luxurious desert lodge you can take game drives in search of unique desert species such as oryx antelopes, springboks, jackals and ostriches. Outdoor dining is also a highlight, under clear black skies decorated with brilliant stars and the Milky Way. From Sossusvlei a scenic flight takes you over vast dune fields to the charming coastal town of Swakopmund where you can spend time on the beach, enjoy fresh oysters and seafood dinners, and explore the German architecture on foot. Then fly over the rugged Skeleton Coast to Damaraland and the classic Desert Rhino Tented camp which lies among rolling hills and a surprising wealth of arid-adapted wildlife including free roaming black rhinos. This safari camp works in collaboration with the Save the Rhino Trust and offers tracking black rhino on foot, as well as game drives through this vast desert ecosystem where freshwater springs support healthy populations of desert-adapted elephants, Hartmann's mountain zebras, giraffes, gemsboks, springboks, kudus and predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and brown and spotted hyenas. Next fly to the famous Etosha National Park and a private reserve on its southern boundary called Ongava, where you can take in classic game drives in search of Africa’s big five before concluding your safari at Okonjima, a private reserve west of the Waterberg Plateau and home to AfriCat, a non-profit organization set up to conserve and protect threatened cheetahs, leopards, and other wild carnivores of Namibia. Here you can see this innovative program at work and participate in radio-tracking on foot of rehabilitated cheetahs or spotted hyenas.
