8,000 Square Miles of Wild Safari Land

Made up of two separate parks, Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park, Tsavo is the largest national park in Kenya, and one of the largest animal sanctuaries in the world. The slightly larger and wilder Tsavo East is generally flat, with dry plains and is famous for its large herds of buffalo and elephants, while Tsavo West is a rolling, rocky landscape where the Big Five, hippos, and a range of birdlife may be spotted. The two parks are divided by a railway which infamously began construction in the late 1800’s, and where workers were reportedly terrorized by two maneless, man-eating lions who were subsequently killed, and their bodies sold to the Field Museum in Chicago. Today’s Tsavo lions are notable for the males’ distinctive short, thin manes, or no manes at all.
