      Nyungwe Forest

      Africa's Largest Protected Mountain Rainforest

Encompassing nearly 400 square miles, and rising to Mount Bigugu’s peak at 9,678 feet above sea level, Nyungwe Forest is a mosaic of microhabitats from tall dense forests to open flower-filled marshes. The diverse, protected terrain is home to one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of chimpanzees, as well as other primates like black and white colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabey. The forest also harbors about 300 bird species, including giant hornbills, great blue turacos, and hundreds of butterflies and orchids which can be seen on canopy walks and primate tracking excursions.
