      Maputaland Marine Reserve

Diverse Ecosystems on the South African Coastline

Located on the pristine northeast coast of South Africa, the Maputaland Marine Reserve stretches along the Indian Ocean coastline of KwaZulu-Natal from the Mozambique border to Sodwana Bay. Part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, (named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999), the biodiverse reserve encompasses untouched coastline with coral reefs, freshwater lake ecosystems coastal forests, wetlands, grasslands and woodlands. The area is home to a stunning diversity of marine life, and warm ocean waters draw both loggerhead and leatherback turtles, sharks, dolphins, and humpback whales, along with a wide range of aquatic life in the coral reefs. Within the reserve are several protected areas, perhaps most notably Rocktail Bay, where world-class snorkeling and scuba diving and inviting golden beaches provide an excellent contrast to African safari game viewing. The reef systems are prolific with soft and hard corals, and abundant fish species such as butterflyfish and triggerfish, rockmover wrasse, various eels, sharks including the iconic whale shark and ragged-tooth, dolphins and turtles. From October to March you may be fortunate to witness loggerhead and leatherback turtles coming ashore to dig a nest and lay eggs in the sand, after which the return of hatchling turtles to the sea is a profoundly moving experience.
