      Makgadikgadi Pans

Salt Pans Seasonally Transform to Host Africa's Lesser-Known Great Migration

Located southeast of the Okavango Delta and surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, the Makgadikgadi Pans is the largest network of salt pans in the world. The pans are relics of Africa’s greatest super lake, which dried up several thousand years ago. The dry, salty pans are surrounded by sandy desert, and seasonally filled with water and grass, attracting wildlife. Rains transform this harsh environment into a habitat for migrating animals, and is host to Africa's second largest migration of zebra, wildebeest, and the predators that prey upon them. Bushman trackers lead game walks, while other experts guide game drives, and four-wheel-drive excursions by low impact quad-bikes to remote archaeological sites in the pans where traces of prehistoric man have been uncovered.
