      Ras Kutani

      The Perfect Place to Relax

On arrival at the airstrip, you will be met and driven approximately 10 minutes to Ras Kutani, an idyllic beach getaway located on the tranquil Indian Ocean. Tanzania's coastal vegetation is lush and dotted with many small farming villages, where clusters of thatched huts stand under palm and papaya trees. Being driven south of Dar es Salaam, you'll leave the city surprisingly quickly as tar gives way to gravel, and pavements to swaying palm trees. Ras Kutani is set on a crescent of white sandy beach flanked by a freshwater lagoon and a coastal forest. The lodge is situated 22 miles south of Dar es Salaam. Home to a scattered, well-appointed cluster of bandas, peace and tranquility is assured. Long stretches of pristine beach and warm blue seas offer romantic hideaways and total relaxation before or after the excitement of a bush safari. Accommodation is in nine spacious reed and thatch cottages constructed of natural, local materials that harmonize perfectly with the wonderful surroundings. The cottages sit either along the edge of the lagoon, or face out across the sea. Each is light and airy, with a large veranda that is open to the breeze. Set back from the veranda, through wide French doors, is the bedroom. The bed frame is made from white-washed polished stone and is colorfully decorated with mosquito netting hanging from the frame above. Ethnic furnishings impart a sense of the Tanzanian coast's rich cultural heritage. The floors of the room are covered in weaved makuti mats and the walls are made with solid thick bamboo. The use of natural materials helps the room to stay amazingly cool throughout the day – without the need for air conditioning or a fan. Each cottage has its own en-suite bathroom and views of the azure ocean. The bathroom keeps in style with the rest of the room with makuti mat floors, white washes surfaces and bamboo walls. A flush toilet, hot and cold shower and his and her sinks complete the room. Relaxation is the keynote at Ras Kutani. The temperate seas and proximity of coral reefs ensure a wealth of marine life and interest for those keen on snorkeling. For those who prefer a somewhat drier experience, kayaks are available to explore the freshwater lagoon. Nature lovers will find their pleasure close to home. The tropical, coastal forest behind the lodge boasts some 132 different species of trees in many of which one can watch the antics of four species of monkey, including the spectacular black-and-white colobus. Next to this forest walk, one can also make a visit to the village nearby to taste Swahili life.
