      Old Mondoro

      An Intimate and Private Safari

The Lower Zambezi Valley is a huge rift in the earth's crust, through which the Zambezi River flows, providing attraction for wildlife. The landscape is beautiful: tall leadwoods, ebonies, acacias and figs stand on a carpet of rich grassland. But the main attraction is the area's game, including leopards, lions, elephants, hippos and other wildlife. Family owned and operated, Old Mondoro is the Lower Zambezi National Park's most intimate and private safari camp. Overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited islands from a grove of Acacia trees, this is perhaps the most beautiful site in the Lower Zambezi National Park and certainly one of the most remote. Appropriately constructed of canvas and natural materials, Old Mondoro’s four chalets have an open and adventurous feel, providing a perfect retreat after a day filled with excitement in the bush. At night, canvas blinds are rolled down and secured, although with the night chorus you are assured of never feeling cut off from the action. Each chalet has a king-size bed (or two single beds) draped in mosquito nets and Egyptian cotton linens, 24-hour lighting, and hot and cold water supply. The en-suite facilities include indoor flush toilet and washbasin with an outdoor shower and “splash-tub” all overlooking the Zambezi. A shaded timber sun deck completes the accommodation with daybed for relaxation with the very best of views. The main area is a large, open-sided structure with a polished stone floor and canvas roof containing a small library, well-stocked bar and communal dining table. Beyond this building are the campfire and the boat station at the Zambezi River's edge. Old Mondoro is a true bush camp without any electricity in these main areas; it's lit by storm lanterns at night. An impressive variety of safari activities are available at Old Mondoro, including game drives, walking, canoeing, boating and angling. Led by an award-winning team of Africa-born guides with a fleet of vehicles, boats and canoes at their disposal, guests are able to enjoy their choice of activity where the duration is determined by the rhythm of the bush and the enthusiasm of the guests, rather than by the clock. All of the guides at Old Mondoro are passionate about the environment and wildlife. It is their goal to provide the very best experience in the Lower Zambezi National Park.

If you don’t see availability above, don’t worry. We may still be able to find space on your desired days... just ask.

        Off-Road Game Viewing

In national parks and some other reserves, rules prohibit leaving the designated safari paths. But the wildlife are not always considerate enough to stay nearby. Get better vantages (and better photos) by heading off-road.
