      Okonjima Main Camp

Big Cat Tracking in the Desert

West of the Waterberg Plateau, the vast plains are occasionally broken by the remnants of ancient sandstone outcrops, which once covered large areas of northern Namibia. Nestled among the Omboroko Mountains lies Okonjima – a Herero name meaning Place of the Baboons. The Okonjima Main Camp was the original Hanssen family farmhouse, reconstructed as a luxury lodge which serves as a base for a wide range of activities: radio-track leopards and hyenas from our game-viewing vehicles. The leopards roam freely and catch their own prey within the 11,000-acre private rehabilitation area. View nightlife such as porcupine, honey badgers and caracal, among others, at a nocturnal hide. Six double rooms are situated around a lush garden and overlook the open-fire entertainment area. The ten new, luxury rooms all have a bush view, three of them overlooking a waterhole. Each room has two double beds, a mini-fridge, a coffee/tea station, a roof-fan, twin basins and a larger shower. No indoor heating is provided. The camp also includes three en-suite, luxury twin tents and a secluded swimming pool. The following morning you are welcome to join the Bushman Trail, an easy walking trail that is highly informative. You get to learn about the art of making traditional artifacts and how the San adapt and survive in an unforgiving wilderness environment. Participation is welcomed. Guests are invited to participate on foot in the radio-tracking of the rehabilitated spotted hyenas on the Large Carnivore Tracking Trail. These rehabilitated carnivores roam freely and catch their own prey within the 11,000-acre Okonjima rehabilitation nature reserves. Visit the Cheetah Project, which offers you valuable insight into the welfare work of The AfriCat Foundation.
