      Nyungwe Forest Lodge

Majestic Mountains and Home to One Fifth of Africa’s Primates in Rwanda's Nyungwe Forest

The magnificent and expansive Nyungwe Forest is a reason to prolong your stay in Rwanda. Rising over the shores of Lake Kivu, Nyungwe is one of the largest, most primal and biodiverse forests along the Albertine Rift. The rich mosaic of habitats includes bamboo groves, open flowery marshes, giant lobelias along the roadside and dense jungle vegetation. It is also the primary water catchment area for Rwanda and the region, as Nyungwe is the site of the famous Congo Nile Divide. Nyungwe Forest Lodge is built to blend in with the surrounding environment and is situated in a tea plantation on the edge of the Nyungwe closed canopy rain forest, home to 13 species of primate including chimpanzees. The 24-room property, which is tucked deep in the mountains, underscores its plantation setting with chandeliers made from tea strainers and spa treatments that utilize tea leaves. The lodge further reflects its surroundings with design touches such as roof tiles crafted by local artisans. Rooms at Nyungwe Forest Lodge include en-suite bathrooms featuring separate soaking tubs and showers, fireplaces, and even the occasional houseguest: Colobus monkeys frequently play in the trees behind the lodge. Furthermore, all rooms and suites are forest facing. The forest hosts a rich floral diversity and is host to 13 primate species, which make up a staggering 20-25% of the total number of primates found in Africa. This includes a healthy chimpanzee population, golden monkeys, as well as the largest troops of black and white colobus found on the continent - a habituated troop of 400 individuals are resident in the forest. The following activities can be arranged at an additional cost at the time of booking or upon arrival at the lodge: chimpanzee trekking, black and white colobus monkey trekking, grey – cheeked mangabey trekking, blue monkey and golden monkey trekking, various guided walking trails, bird watching walk and cultural area walk with lodge guide. Primate tracking and nature walks are not the only brand of adventure here - Nyungwe now boasts East Africa’s only canopy walk - a suspended walkway over the treetops. Please note that children under the age of fifteen are not permitted to trek chimpanzees, but are able to see the other primates and wonders of the forest.
