      Nsefu Camp

Zambia's Photographic Treasure for More Than 50 Years

The South Luangwa National Park boasts verdant floodplains, mopane woodlands and indigenous hardwood forests, and a mighty river that attracts more than 60 different species of mammals and 400 species of birds. It’s a natural utopia and one of Africa’s truly great wildlife sanctuaries. On a sweeping bend of the river, in the heart of the South Luangwa National Park, lies Nsefu. This was the first photographic safari camp in Zambia and dates back to the early fifties. The Nsefu Sector was recognized then as a phenomenal area and it still is. The view of the river is superb and includes a terraced area where game grazes during the day. The bar and sitting room, tucked in beside a huge extinct termite mound, overlooks a waterhole that is very productive for game, especially leopard at night. Any animal that enjoys mud spends many hours there - wallowing warthogs and buffalo are frequent visitors and, of course, many families of elephants will come down to drink and bathe. Common antelope are seen throughout the day and are a feature of the camp. All this can be seen from the comfortable armchairs of the close-by sitting area. The original 6 brick-and-stone rondavels have been extended, with a spacious en-suite bathroom added. The furnishings and fittings are in keeping with an old fashioned, understated elegant feel. Crisp cotton sheets, thick cotton towels and linen bathrobes, along with the characteristic English toiletries, are a luxurious touch. Lighting is supplied by generator and solar lamps. Each room has a clear view of the Luangwa River, through both the large windows and from the wooden verandahs. Nsefu offers a choice of activities including short walking safaris, day and night game drives, visits to the local village and boating, as available. Typically there are two activities per day, each lasting around three to four hours and led by an expert guide. All walking safaris are accompanied by an armed game ranger, as well as a fully qualified guide.
