      Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Incredible Tanzania Escape at the Crater's Edge

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, perched 7,800 feet above sea level on the southern edge of the famous Ngorongoro Crater, is one of the Wonders of the World and a designated World Heritage Site. At the eastern edge of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most perfectly formed calderas on the planet. With over 40,000 predominantly Maasai pastoralists inhabiting the Ngorongoro Conservation Area it is a prime example of mankind living in harmony with wildlife. A permanent population of more than 30,000 animals inhabit a mere 100 square miles in the 2,000 feet deep crater. Resident game includes large herds of resident wildebeest, 16 highly endangered black rhino and approximately 70 lions, nomadic cheetahs, leopards, golden and black-backed jackals, servals, spotted hyenas, buffalo, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle. Unmatched for its natural variety, there are few places on earth where such a tremendous diversity of landscapes exist inside a region this size. Apart from its wildlife riches, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is also of great archaeological importance, with the remains of some of mankind’s earliest ancestors discovered in the area. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge has been called the game lodge at the top of the world. Divided into three luxury camps with a total of 30 suites, the Ngorongoro Carter Lodge maintains a small, intimate feel with similar in style and excellent service throughout. Inspired by the design of a Maasai mud and-stick manyatta, each stilted suite is sumptuously furnished with paneled walls and floors made of Tanzanian hardwoods, rich raw-silk curtains, hand-beaded chandeliers, gilt mirrors, a fireplace and a butler’s lobby. En-suite bathroom has twin hand basins, shower, chandelier lit bathtub and separate w.c. The suites all feature decks with magnificent views of the crater floor. Each camp has a sitting and dining room, an outdoor dining area and viewing decks. The sitting rooms have woven banana bark ceilings and are adorned with hand beaded chandeliers, carved and gilded wall plaques, brocade sofas, Persian carpets, candles and bowls of red roses. The domed dining room with its welcoming fireplace, crystal, silver and massive wooden platters makes every meal a special occasion. At the entrance to the lodge there is a well-stocked safari shop. Daily activities include Ngorongoro Crater game drives. Guests depart in the early morning in closed safari vehicles with pop-up roofs, accompanied by an expert ranger. A 40-minute drive to the crater entrance is followed by a scenic drive to the crater floor, allowing plenty of time to admire the spectacular views. The road descends through the lush forests that blanket the rim and upper slopes of the crater, where buffalo and elephants may be spotted. Once inside the crater, game drives explore the grassy crater floor, fever tree forest, banks of Lake Magadi, and the marshes that surround it. Guests enjoy a picnic lunch, surrounded by the vast herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and gazelle. Optional activities, such as visiting a Maasai village, an excursion to Olduvai Gorge, a crater floor banquet and sundowners on the crater rim can be arranged at an additional cost.
