      Mushara Lodge

On the White Salt Pans of Etosha

Located only 5 miles from the Von Lindequist Gate on the eastern outskirts of the Etosha National Park, Mushara Lodge is ideally situated for travelers visiting the park. The Etosha National Park covers a vast area which has been protected since German colonial rule and is now one of the most productive game-viewing parks in Africa. Once a lake the size of Holland, it now shimmers with a glaring bright white from crystallized salt across its entire surface. The park is justifiably famed for the wealth of wildlife – 114 mammal species, 340 bird species,110 reptile species, 16 amphibian species and one species of fish – that congregate at its dozens of waterholes, offering ample reward for those who are patient. Plains game such as zebra, kudu, oryx, wildebeest, giraffe, springbok, impala and eland abound in great numbers on the grasslands while large herds of elephants are common. Lions dominate the predator food chain and make good use of the waterholes as hunting grounds while smaller predators like the black-backed jackal trot around, oblivious to humans. The demand for fresh drinking water means that there is little hierarchy at the waterholes and the diversity of species drinking at the same time can be staggering. The lodge consists of ten spacious chalets, one family unit, a triple room and two single rooms. The thatched public area consists of a small library with a selection of good books, a bar with an extensive wine cellar, airy lounge with welcoming fireplace for winter evenings, a dining area and well-stocked curio shop. Great attention has been paid to the décor, which is an eclectic blend of traditional African and modern art works combined with original paintings. In a horseshoe shape around the swimming pool there are ten well-spaced thatched chalets. The rooms are extremely spacious and are furnished with air conditioning, mosquito net, mini-bar fridge, safe, tea and coffee making facilities, electric lights, direct dial telephone, wardrobe and luggage rack. The bathrooms are en-suite with separate toilette. All chalets and rooms have just a shower whereas the triple room and the family house have a shower and a bath. A feature of Mushara is its large, tiled, bright blue swimming pool surrounded by green lawn that is kept well manicured by the occasional visiting local wildlife. Morning or afternoon game drives are available at an additional cost.
