      Loisaba Starbeds

A Room with A View Under the Starry Skies in the Laikipia Plateau

The eastern escarpment of the Rift Valley known as the Laikipia Plateau is divided into a patchwork of enormous ranches. Over the years, with cooperation from their owners, these farms were transformed into game reserves and now contain some of the most exclusive lodges in the remotest parts of Kenya. Loisaba is a 61,000-acre private ranch and game sanctuary located in the Northern Laikipia that is home to Loisaba Tented Camp and the Kiboko Star Beds. The property is untamed bush but also a working cattle farm. It conducts important wildlife research and works closely with the community who has defended this land for generations. Here there are no game park rules, no caged animals and none of the constraints of western life. The local Samburu and Maasai tribes are full partners in the project so your visit not only conserves the environment but also pays for the education and welfare of the people who call this remote and magnificent region home. Unique to Loisaba, the star beds are a truly memorable African experience which is most often selected for a one or two night stay in conjunction with a stay at Loisaba Tented Camp. The star beds overlook Kiboko waterhole, home to resident hippo and frequented by passing animals. The main area consists of an open lounge and communal dining area (private dining available). Food is prepared in a traditional camp kitchen, barbeque style. Each Star Bed is a dramatically designed, a handcrafted wooden raised platform, and partially covered with a thatched roof. Homemade Mukokoteni (uniquely designed bed on wheels), can either be wheeled onto the open deck area for a night under the stars, or left under the shelter of the roof. Each platform is en-suite and has a large camp-style shower. The platforms are sited to ensure complete privacy. All the beds have complete "four-poster" insect netting. The Star Beds are normally reached by one of many options; on foot, horse, camel or vehicle. Guests are guided and hosted by a team of traditional Samburu and Laikipiak Maasai warriors.
