      Little Ruckomechi

A Mana Pools Classic Safari Camp on the Zambezi River

Mana Pools National Park lies at the heart of the Zambezi Valley, a remote, beautiful place with spectacular views. The area offers large concentrations of buffalo and elephant, while predators such as lion, wild dog, leopard and cheetah are often sighted. Greater kudus, Burchell's zebras, impalas, warthogs and common waterbucks can be seen on the surrounding plains and the grunting of hippos can be heard all day. Birdlife is superb, with numerous local specials like collared palm-thrushes and racket-tailed rollers. Little Ruckomechi’s scenic location epitomizes Mana Pools National Park in all its abundance. The camp is all about the intimacy of being close to nature and among the iconic albida trees that characterize the area. The camp’s location within the private Ruckomechi Concession ensures an exclusive safari experience complete with a diverse range of activities through which to explore Mana, one of the great wildlife areas of Africa. Built on wooden decks, the en-suite tents are airy and elegant; a reminder of the by-gone explorer era. The living spaces include a dining room and lounge as well as a plunge pool all looking out over the great Zambezi River and the Zambian foothills in the distance. Game drives early in the morning or late afternoon take place in open Land Rovers, taking in a coffee break or a sundowner at a scenic spot; seven seats allows everyone a window seat. The multiplicity of birdlife in the area includes three-banded coursers, western banded snake-eagles, Arnot's chats, green-capped eremomelas, African golden orioles, Lilian’s lovebirds, Böhm's spinetails and Meve's starlings. Cruises down this stretch of the Zambezi River are in nine-seater pontoons or in a six-seater speed boat. Canoes are a more adventurous option to see the large numbers of water birds and other wildlife that are attracted to the river and seasonal pans. Mana Pools National Park is a remote, beautiful place that is best experienced on foot, led by a professional guide. This thrilling way of exploring the surrounding bush often heralds many exciting sightings. Bream (tilapia), barbel (catfish) and tigerfish are the some of the more common fish found at Mana Pools. Catch and release is practiced at all Wilderness Safaris camps and keen fishermen are always encouraged to bring their own equipment as there is only basic fishing tackle at the camp. *This activity is subject to the availability of boats and is at an additional cost, per boat per hour payable direct.
