Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
A Sweet Elephant Interaction
The Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage is located in a secluded area of the Nairobi National Park, where orphaned baby elephants amongst other animals are taken care of by a dedicated team of conservationists. The orphanage is run by Daphne Sheldrick, the wife of the late famous Naturalist, David William Sheldrick who was the founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya from its inception in 1948 to 1976. Daphne Sheldrick was the first person in the entire world to successfully hand rear newborn fully milk dependent African Elephant orphans, something that spanned 28 years of trial and error to achieve. By the year 2004 the Trust had successfully saved and hand-reared over 55 infant African Elephant calves, two from the day of birth. ...show less

Giraffe Center
Meet Africa's Tallest Inhabitants
African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya limited (AFEW (K) LTD) also known as the Giraffe Center was founded in 1979 by the late Jock Leslie- Melvile, a Kenyan citizen of British descent and his wife the late Betty Leslie Melvile an American citizen. Jock’s extra ordinary vision of creating an educational institution in conjunction with rescuing the endangered Rothschild giraffes resulted in the present day Giraffe Center that has become a World famous Nature Education Center. The Giraffe Center is a Non-Profit organization whose main objective is to provide conservation education for school children and the youth of Kenya. All education programs are offered to them free of charge. The Giraffe Centre derives 90% of its funds from the entrance fee collected and from the sales in the gift shop and teahouse. Therefore, by visiting and/or making purchase from the gift shop and teahouse you have contributed towards conservation education to the Kenyan youth. The endangered Rothschild giraffe breeding program started with the inception of the Giraffe Center back then in 1979. The giraffes breed naturally in an approximate 120 Acreage of land and the young calves born at the center are introduced back into the wild at the age of 2years. The giraffes at the center are closely observed and monitored by AFEW staff and when need be their natural diet is supplemented with Lucern Grass, salt blocks and carrots. Ever since the breeding started, the center has handled over 50 Rothschild Giraffes and most of them have been introduced back into the wild in selected Kenya’s protected areas. ...show less
