      Gibb's Farm

      A Luxury Farm

Gibb's Farm is a working farm located on the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It comprises a warm and friendly community where the rhythm of farm life has calmed and restored the weary safari journeyer for more than 40 years. Gibb’s Farm hugs nearly a mile of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, part of a 3,200-square-mile reserve. Ideally located, the Farm lies halfway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, near the village of Karatu. Unmatched for its natural variety, there are few places on earth where such a tremendous diversity of landscapes exist inside a region this size. Apart from its wildlife riches, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is also of great archaeological importance, with the remains of some of mankind’s earliest ancestors discovered in the area. Set among formal English gardens, the farmhouse and 20 en-suite cottages are the heart of a working farm. Built in 1929, the farmhouse has retained the charm of a well looked-after private house. Cozy living rooms and reading corners are just steps away from the dining room, bar and gift shop. All cottages feature rich wooden floors and classic interiors with wraparound windows, bringing the gardens and Ngorongoro Forest Reserve into view; large en-suite garden bathrooms offer twin basins and indoor/ outdoor showers; and access to the surrounding flower gardens from private verandahs. A wraparound fireplace warms the bathroom and living area. Each of the cottages has a theme, indicated by the name of the cottage, which explores different aspects of Gibb’s Farm and the surrounding communities. Artwork adorning the walls and shelves of each cottage support the theme, adding to the story. The artwork is commissioned through an artist-in-residence program which invites East African artists to spend time at the farm exploring their creativity. Today, Gibb’s Farm consists of 30 acres of quality organic coffee, 10 acres of organic vegetables and fruit, 5 acres of flowers and herbs and a working dairy and pig farm. There is also a tree nursery on the farm to encourage the growth of native tree species in the area. The entire operation is a model of ecologically sustainable agriculture. Every possible element of Gibb’s Farm is ecologically friendly and sustainable. There are numerous activities in which to partake while at Gibb’s Farm. In addition to game drives in the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park, enjoy learning about the farming culture of Gibb’s Farm, visit a local village and school, participate in various educational walks around the farm focusing on indigenous medicine, the Ngorongoro Forest, or gardens. Night drives, mountain biking and birding are also popular activities.
