      Fundu Lagoon

      The Real African Island Experience

Pemba Island lies about 50 miles to the northeast of Zanzibar. Although broadly comparable in size to Zanzibar, Pemba is much less developed, depending more on agriculture than tourism for its economy. It is quite typical to find rural roads leading through villages where women in bright kangas sit and chat, ox-drawn carts are stacked high with fruit, and the air is filled with the smell of spices. Pemba is one of the most densely populated areas of Tanzania, with most of the people living in fairly traditionally-designed square houses, built using mud walls around a wooden frame with roofs of thatch or corrugated iron. Blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings, the resort’s facilities are among the best in the region. From the open-sided restaurant, which offers outstanding international cuisine, to the three bars and beautiful infinity pool, every comfort is complimented by the soothing ease and atmosphere known as barefoot luxury. Discretely tucked into lush tropical greenery, the 16 rooms at Fundu Lagoon vary in size, but share very similar features. All are large walk-in tents set on raised wooden decks, with a private verandah, small lounge area and en-suite bathroom. The dark wooden floors contrasting with crisp cream colored cotton sheets provide a stylish and comfortable feel, reminiscent of a tented safari lodge. The canvas walls add a rustic feel to the room, resulting in a cozy room that has character and comfort. Bathrooms are found at the rear of each tent with a hot-and-cold shower, single sink and proper flush toilet. Activities such as unguided mangrove canoe safaris, dhow sunset cruise, shore-based snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking and village treks are included in the cost of the accommodation. As one of the top five diving locations in the world, Pemba has a fully equipped PADI resort diving center. Additional water and adventure activities, day trips and touring can be arranged at a supplementary cost. Please advise if you are interested in additional activities and we will confirm availability and pricing.
