      Elephant Sanctuary at Hartbespoort Dam

A Temporary Home for You and Some Much Larger Guests

Nestled in the Magaliesberg Mountains, only one hour from Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Elephant Sanctuary at Hartbeespoort Dam lies in a malaria-free area. It is surrounded by natural indigenous bush and is home to impala, klipspringer, baboons, porcupines, caracals, leopards, a host of other small mammals, 350 bird species and, of course, five magnificent African Elephants. The Elephant Sanctuary provides a “halfway house” for young African elephants in need of a temporary home. It is the only operation in South Africa that provides for elephants in this way. It is their vision to release all the elephants into an environment where they can be more independent once they are older. Join us for an intimate overnight stay in one of our two lodges. The program is a fully education-oriented, guided experience during which you can touch, feed and interact with the elephants. Arrive to welcome drinks, check in and relax while observing elephants from main deck, or have a swim in lodge pool. Watch the elephants being stabled for the night, followed by a walk to the mountain deck for sundowners. Return to the lodge for a four-course dinner in the boma, where you can relax around a log fire. Be ready on the main deck for morning brushdowns of the elephants, walk trunk-in-hand, interact with them in the forest area, learn more about their behavior, anatomy and social structure, feed them and form relationships and bonds with these amazing pachyderms. Breakfast is usually served after the brushdowns and walk. You will stay in either the Main Lodge or the Bush Lodge. The Main Lodge is an Indo-African style, nine-bed lodge. Your room shares a common wall with one of our elephant's stables – you will be amazed how quiet they actually are. There is a covered patio and lounge for relaxing/reading, and a secluded swimming pool in the forest a few steps from the lodge. The main deck overlooks the elephant boma and has an adjoining a curio shop with interesting, mostly elephant-related items, and fully licensed bar. Bush Lodge is an African lodge, designed for outdoor living with a wide veranda that overlooks the lawned pool area. Its wooden decks, thatch bar and well-established trees make it an oasis within the bushveld. The lodge has been designed to make guests feel relaxed, comfortable and welcome. Should your group be taking over the entire lodge, you will find it is like having your own magical home with all the suites feeding out onto the main living area. The lodge is situated approximately 300 feet from the Main Lodge and has its own bar, thatched lounge area and swimming pool. The rooms are tastefully appointed, with subtle bushveld browns and softer cream tones and sumptuously dressed beds.
