      Benguerra Island

A Wildlife Haven in the Indian Ocean

Benguerra is the second largest of the four main islands that form the Bazaruto Archipelago off the Mozambican coast. Some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world is available off Benguerra’s shores with the surrounding coral reefs rich in sea life. The archipelago is one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered dugong - pale, voluptuous sea mammal fabled to have made bygone mariners believe in mermaids. Inland, Benguerra Island is comprised of forest, savannah, freshwater lakes and wetland eco-systems that sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora. Freshwater crocodiles can be found in the three lakes, bearing testimony to the island’s mainland past. The island, which is home to approximately 140 bird species, was declared a National Park in 1971. There are three types of accommodation at Benguerra Island: cabanas, casitas and Villa Chebuena. The cabanas are built right on the edge of the beach. Romantic and elegant, the suites offer guests the chance to experience the ultimate island getaway. The cabanas each have a queen-size bed with mosquito net, a large bathroom with bath, shower and outdoor shower, overhead fan, private deck with jacuzzi/plunge pool and sun loungers, mini-bar and tea & coffee making facilities. Each casita has a queen-size bed with mosquito net, a tastefully appointed lounge area, a timber deck with plunge pool and an outdoor dining gazebo for starlit dinners. Villa Chibuene is the epitome of exclusivity. The luxury furnishings and private facilities make it an ideal place for those wanting unsurpassed comfort and privacy, honeymooners and families. A personal chef prepares all meals at the Villa, although the main lodge's dining facilities are also available to Villa guests, if desired. The villa has two double bedrooms (which may be converted into twins), mosquito nets and overhead fans, en-suite bathrooms with beautiful copper baths, outdoor showers with intricate mosaic inlays, and an intimate lounge and dining area. Standard included activities include sea kayaking, sunset dhow cruises, Landrover safari picnics, village visits, local cultural events, beach barbeque, tribal dances and a daytime guided walk. Other activities on offer for an additional cost are snorkeling at 2 Mile Reef, scuba diving, fishing, catamaran trips, horse riding, castaway boat picnics and spa treatments.
