      Azura Benguerra Island

Beach-Side Luxury with a Strong Local Connection

Azura is located on Benguerra Island within the Bazaruto Marine National Park. Benguerra Island lies 8.5 miles northeast of Vilanculos, the nearest town and site of the international airport. The offshore reefs are some of the most pristine on the coast of East Africa, and a joy to behold, with a plethora of marine life and amazing coral gardens. Just 16 villas are nestled along one of the last undiscovered stretches of beach in the world, with all the creature comforts you could wish for, sparkling private pools, Mozambican butler-hosts to look after your every need, fish and seafood fresh from the ocean, a fantastic range of activities and experiences, an African spa to relax in, all at a community based project where the local islanders benefit as much as you. The hand-built villas blend modern chic with all that is traditional in Mozambique. The creature comforts you would expect from a luxury boutique resort are there, set off by locally sourced wooden beams and traditional artwork beneath a thatched jekka roof. Each is just footsteps from the beach, yet designed with seclusion in mind. The public areas are open to the beach and sea with amazing vistas across calm blue waters to the Indian Ocean beyond. Furnished with cool contemporary cottons and the textures of Africa, they are open to the breezes. TV and internet are discreetly tucked away in the library. With the Indian Ocean on its doorstep, many of the hotel’s activities and experiences are focused around it. You can snorkel or scuba dive, saltwater fly fish or big game fish, watch the sunset as you sail on our dhow, picnic in splendid isolation, or cruise to deserted beaches to look for pansy shells. The island also offers a range of land activities and experiences for you to enjoy, including island drives, cultural encounters, bird-watching, beach picnics, star gazing, and visits to the local community and the school which was built by the Rainbow Fund charity. Climb the dunes, some of which are scattered with the remnants of ancient Arab pottery, for an amazing view of the archipelago.
