      Angama Mara

A Luxury Lodge with Spectacular Masai Mara Views

High above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley lies a beautiful piece of land overlooking what many safari travelers deem the loveliest game reserve on the continent, Kenya’s Masai Mara. The sky melts into the endless plains in a vista so wide it takes your breath away. The lodge, comprising two totally separate and intimate camps each of fifteen tented suites, is situated where some of the most romantic ‘Ngong Hills’ scenes were filmed for the movie Out of Africa. The guest areas at each of the two intimate camps are set on the edge of the Ololoolo Escarpment, with wraparound views of the Mara below. Inspired by the old-world atmosphere of Nairobi’s Muthaiga Country Club, guests dine, read, relax, and enjoy a drink in a place where indoors and outdoors merge into one. The architecture is filled with drama, and the red brickwork is inspired by local Maasai technique. By contrast, the tented suites are reminiscent of a classical tented African safari. Every guest comfort has been considered: end-to-end glass fronts, sweeping canvas, polished parquet floors, and just the right amount of furniture and decks overhanging the Mara below. At the pavilion, set between the two camps, guests will find a fitness center, a swimming pool, a curated gallery of African craft and art, clothing and jewelry, and a sun-filled studio where Maasai women work at beading bespoke items. The game viewing in the Mara Triangle is among the most outstanding in Africa. Indeed, all guests have to do is descend a private track directly from the lodge and twenty minutes later witness one of the continent’s most dramatic wildlife events: a Mara River crossing. The wildlife is abundant and the gentle rolling grassland ensures that animals are never out of sight. Birds too are prolific, including migrant birds and 57 species of birds of prey. Lions are common, and prides of up to 20 or 30 animals can be seen, often under the baleful supervision of a large, black-maned patriarch. Cheetahs are also numerous and the Mara is probably the best place for sighting leopards under natural conditions, though this predator is rare. Other game commonly seen includes buffalo, rhinoceros, elephant, silver-backed jackals, hippos, crocodiles, cheetahs, wildebeests, hartebeests, impalas, zebras, roan antelopes, and gazelles. Included activities are game drives into the Mara Triangle and walking safaris on the escarpment and guided walks. Guests can opt for additional activities at an extra cost including: in-room massage, hot air balloon safaris, and scenic helicopter tours.
