Journal Entry: Day 2 Masai Mara and Virunga Mountains
Today we flew low over the short grass plains of the Masai Mara. Drove a short distance to Governor's, one of the few camps within the reserve. Freshened up in my tent on the banks of the river – with a hippo right in front! My balloon excursion is tomorrow morning. We get up at 4:30 am so we catch the sunrise as our balloons start to drift over the plains.
Fact: I learned today that zebras precede the wildebeest migration. They like the longer grass. Dinner: Delicious. Ostrich, with a glorious South African red. The Amarula night cap under bright stars near the camp fire was very romantic.
Overall impressions: The conversation along the way is unforgettable. Looking forward to comparing notes with fellow travelers on tracking gorillas in Rwanda's Virunga Mountains, the Okavango Delta Mokoro rides, Victoria Falls' thunderous roar, and looking into the eyes of a silverback gorilla. Love the after-dinner laughter with like-minded new friends.
Can't believe I'm sleeping in a traditional Meru tented camp. No electric lights, just the gentle whisper of gas lamps. A true African adventure but with all the creature comforts, thank goodness.
My new tooled leather travel journal, a Bushtracks gift, and this expedition are priceless.
