Journal Entry: Day 9 Private Berber tented camp, Timia Oasis, Niger
Today we drove into the desert in our 4-wheel-drive vehicles. Stopped for a picnic lunch prepared by our traveling chef Vivienne. Arrived at Timia oasis this evening, hidden in a canyon filled with palm gardens - this village is one of the most spectacular of the Air massif. Our intimate Berber tent camp was set in this green mountain oasis, and was very romantic - carpets, white canvas with distinctive black motifs, colorful patterns on the inside.
Dinner: Exotic (and delicious!). Local dishes, served in a beautiful Caidale dining tent surrounded by candlelit Kasbah lanterns.
The conversation: Mint tea in the souks of Marrakech, the baskets of Mali, the Dogon’s mask dance, the patterned desertscapes and snow-capped mountains from the air, the legends of Timbuktu, and the laughter and memories among good friends.
After dinner: An unforgettable evening of Tuareg music. Can't believe I am sleeping in a traditional Berber camp in the Saharan desert. A real adventure but with all the creature comforts. Love my tooled leather travel journal, a gift from Bushtracks.
