About Bushtracks' African Safari Heritage
Our mission is to inspire you to travel to Africa, and you might be wondering why.
It all began in 1866 when Joseph Hamilton Barry, a wine merchant, was sent from London to Cape Town, South Africa on behalf of the family business. He settled in Swellendam and built an empire that began with shipping grain on the "Duke of Gloucester". Four generations later David Tett's grandfather Michael Hamilton Barry moved from the Cape to Bulawayo, the capital of Rhodesia (which became Zimbabwe in 1980). His daughter (David's mother) Jennifer Barry was born in Bulawayo and she married an Englishman called Michael Tett. They had four sons who were born and raised in Rhodesia, the third of whom was David Tett.
From the age of three David's parents would take the family on extended camping safaris in Botswana and Zimbabwe to the Okavango Delta; the Makgadikadi Salt Pans; Hwange, Mana Pools, Gonarehezou, and Chizarrira National Parks. These were the days when safari lodges did not exist, so they would set off in an old Series I Landrover hauling a trailer stuffed with canvas tents and equipment that would support them in the bush for two to three weeks at a time. They walked through game rich savannas led by their father, armed with an old 303 rifle and a curiosity to learn about the African bush.
Unknowingly these childhood expeditions led by Michael and Jennifer Tett were laying the foundation for Bushtracks Expeditions, a successful Africa safari tours business started by David Tett, his wife Carolyn and his two brothers Nicholas and Christopher.
So why Africa? Growing up there was magical and it enriched our lives in some incredible ways, and we want to share some of these experiences that changed our own lives.
In a nutshell, over the last twenty years we have managed to share Africa with several thousand travelers, friends, and family. Many of them have been twice with us. Some have returned there 3 or 4 times, and 2 couples have explored Africa more than 9 times with Bushtracks which is a true testament to this extraordinary continent.
